VMSA Celebrates Dr. Ken Nicely as the 2026 Barbara Nichols Educator of the Year

The 2026 Barbara Nichols Educator of the Year Award recognizes exceptional leadership, dedication, and impact in middle-level education across Virginia. Presented by the Virginia Middle School Association (VMSA), this prestigious honor celebrates individuals who embody the spirit of excellence in supporting students, educators, and school communities during the critical middle school years. Named in tribute to a trailblazing contributor to middle-level education—likely honoring Barb Nichols, VMSA’s Executive Director and a passionate advocate for continuous improvement in middle schools—the award highlights those who go above and beyond to foster innovative, student-centered environments.

This year’s recipient, Dr. Ken Nicely, Superintendent of Roanoke County Public Schools (RCPS), stands as a shining example of transformative educational leadership. With a career spanning more than three decades rooted in Virginia’s classrooms and administrative offices, Dr. Nicely has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to middle-level education, instructional excellence, and the overall success of students and staff.

Dr. Nicely began his journey in education in 1993 as a Spanish teacher at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke County Public Schools. His early experiences in the classroom gave him firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities of adolescent learning, laying a strong foundation for his future roles. In 2002, he transitioned to administration as an assistant principal at Hidden Valley Middle School (HVMS), where he directly engaged with the unique developmental needs of middle school students. By 2006, he was appointed principal of HVMS, a position he held with distinction, guiding the school through periods of growth and innovation while prioritizing a supportive, engaging environment for young learners.

His leadership trajectory continued upward. In 2012, Dr. Nicely moved to the central office as Director of Secondary Instruction & Technology, where he influenced curriculum, professional development, and technology integration across middle and high schools. He advanced to Director of Administration in 2016, overseeing operational and strategic initiatives. In spring 2018, he was named Assistant Superintendent of Administration, and on August 9, 2018, the Roanoke County School Board unanimously selected him as Superintendent following the retirement of his predecessor.

As Superintendent, Dr. Nicely has led RCPS with a vision centered on equity, innovation, and student success. Under his guidance, the division has emphasized rigorous academics, social-emotional learning, and the integration of technology to prepare students for future opportunities. His tenure has been marked by collaborative decision-making, strong community partnerships, and a focus on empowering educators at all levels—including those in middle schools, where foundational skills and attitudes toward learning are shaped.

Dr. Nicely’s contributions extend beyond Roanoke County. As a Past President of the Virginia Middle School Association (VMSA), he has advocated statewide for middle-level best practices, professional development, and recognition of outstanding educators. His service on the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE) Board of Trustees further underscores his national influence in shaping policies and resources that support middle school students and educators.

In 2025, Dr. Nicely was named the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS) Region VI Superintendent of the Year, a testament to his outstanding leadership and the positive outcomes achieved under his direction. Even as he prepares to retire at the end of the 2025-2026 school year after a remarkable 33-year career with RCPS (and 35 years in education overall), his legacy of dedication endures.

Dr. Ken Nicely exemplifies the qualities the Barbara Nichols Educator of the Year Award seeks to honor: unwavering commitment to middle-level education, innovative leadership, and a lifelong passion for nurturing the potential in every student and educator. Through his progression from classroom teacher to district superintendent—and his active involvement in professional organizations—he has made enduring contributions that strengthen Virginia’s middle schools and inspire the next generation of leaders.

Congratulations to Dr. Ken Nicely, the 2026 Barbara Nichols Educator of the Year—a well-deserved recognition of a distinguished career devoted to educational excellence.
