The Virginia Middle School Association (VMSA) is proud to announce that Sterling Middle School has been awarded a grant for its project, “Tag, You’re It!” This innovative initiative will utilize podcasting tools to enhance the English language learning experience for middle school students.
The project is led by Mabel E. Lamprea, an English Language Learner (ELL) teacher for grades 6-8. “Tag, You’re It!” aims to foster a safe and engaging environment for students to develop their speaking and writing skills through podcast creation.
Podcasting offers a unique blend of writing, storytelling, and public speaking. The project will encourage self-assessment and collaboration as students hone their communication skills within the familiar classroom environment.
The VMSA recognizes this project’s potential to address the specific needs of ELL students. “The ‘Tag, You’re It!’ initiative exemplifies the power of technology in education,” said VMSA President, Dr. Elizabeth Sanders. “By incorporating podcasting, Ms. Lamprea’s project creates a dynamic learning experience that fosters confidence and communication skills in a fun and interactive way.”
Beyond individual projects, the grant will enable Sterling Middle School to expand the scope of its podcasting program. Students will ultimately use the equipment to showcase the diverse stories of their peers, teachers, and other stakeholders within the school community, promoting inclusivity and cultural understanding.
