The Virginia Middle School Association (VMSA) is proud to announce Sarah Wicker as the 2026 Master in the Middle Teacher of the Year.
Sarah Wicker, a dedicated science teacher and curriculum writer at Holman Middle School in Henrico County Public Schools, has been recognized for her exceptional commitment to middle level education. With 13 years of classroom experience, Wicker excels at creating inclusive, high-quality learning environments that empower every student to succeed.
Wicker has particularly distinguished herself through her work with a sheltered English Learner (EL) Science class. In this setting, she has fostered a strong sense of community where newcomer students feel comfortable communicating, collaborating, and taking risks in their learning. By skillfully scaffolding instruction while maintaining the rigor of the curriculum, she ensures that all students—regardless of language background—have equitable access to challenging and meaningful science education.
Her leadership and student-centered approach have earned high praise from colleagues and students alike.
“Sarah is an excellent teacher who leads with equity, heart, and rigor,” said her assistant principal. “But more importantly, it is evident she believes all students can learn and she is an expert in how to create the environment in which all students can be successful.”
A former student echoed this sentiment, sharing: “She is an incredibly intelligent teacher and teaches in ways that make learning fun for students.” They added, “Some teachers don’t always realize that not just their teaching matters, but also their students.”
The VMSA’s Master in the Middle Teacher of the Year award celebrates outstanding middle school educators across Virginia who demonstrate excellence in teaching, innovation, and dedication to the unique needs of young adolescents. Sarah Wicker’s selection highlights her impactful work in supporting diverse learners and promoting academic success through compassionate, rigorous instruction.
Congratulations to Sarah Wicker on this well-deserved honor! The Virginia Middle School Association continues to champion middle level education and the educators who make a lasting difference in the lives of Virginia’s students.
