The Virginia Middle School Association (VMSA) is pleased to announce that Andrew Lewis Middle School (ALMS) has been awarded a grant for its project, “ALMS Diverse Repertoire Initiative.” The grant will support the school’s band program in acquiring new music composed by a wider range of artists, reflecting the diverse demographics of the student body.
The project is led by Thomas Graham, Band Director for grades 6-8, and collaborator Will Allison, Band Assistant. The initiative aims to address the underrepresentation of female and minority composers in the band’s current music library.
The VMSA grant program supports innovative and impactful middle school initiatives across the state. The ALMS Diverse Repertoire Initiative resonated with the selection committee due to its focus on promoting inclusivity and cultural awareness through music education.
“We are thrilled to support the ALMS Band program in this important endeavor,” said VMSA President, Dr. Elizabeth Sanders. “By exposing students to a wider range of composers and musical styles, the initiative fosters a deeper understanding of different cultures and perspectives, contributing to their overall growth as individuals and musicians.”
